Naples hit by strongest earthquake in 40 years
Major damage in Pozzuoli as 4.4 magnitude quake strikes
Series of aftershocks follow as experts warn of possible volcanic eruption
A 4.4 magnitude earthquake has struck the area around the southern Italian city of Naples, causing minor damage in the town of Pozzuoli.
The quake, which hit at 9.08pm local time on Monday, was the strongest to hit the region in 40 years. It was followed by a series of aftershocks, including one of magnitude 3.6.
There were no reports of any injuries or major damage, but the quake caused some buildings in Pozzuoli to collapse. Several roads were also closed due to the risk of further collapse.
The epicentre of the quake was in the Phlegrean Fields, a volcanic area west of Naples. Experts have warned that the earthquake could trigger a volcanic eruption, although there is no immediate danger.
The last major earthquake to hit the Naples area was in 1980, when a 6.9 magnitude quake killed 2,914 people and injured thousands more.
